The First 6 Weeks: 6 Things Every New Mum Needs to Hear

The first six weeks with your newborn can feel like a beautiful whirlwind—exhausting, overwhelming, and magical all at once. Whether this is your first baby or your fourth, those early days come with a steep learning curve.

Here are six things every new mum needs to hear:

1. Your baby just wants you

Forget the pressure to have everything figured out. In these early weeks, your baby doesn’t need routines, fancy gadgets, or a perfectly decorated nursery. They just need you—your warmth, your voice, and your comfort. That’s enough.

2. Feeding is a journey, not a pass or fail

Whether you’re breastfeeding, bottle-feeding, or a mix of both, feeding a newborn can be tough. Cluster feeding, latch issues, and bottle refusals are all normal. Keep going, ask for help when needed, and remember: a fed baby is a happy baby.

3. Sleep is a work in progress

Newborn sleep is unpredictable. Your baby isn’t supposed to sleep through the night yet, and that’s okay. Focus on short-term survival—safe sleep, restful moments, and knowing that better sleep will come with time.

4. You are not "doing it wrong"

Comparing yourself to other mums (or Instagram highlight reels) is a losing game. Every baby is different, and what works for one won’t necessarily work for another. Trust your instincts—you know your baby best.

5. You matter too

It’s easy to put yourself last when caring for a newborn, but you can’t pour from an empty cup. Ask for help, rest when you can, and be kind to yourself. Your well-being is just as important as your baby’s.

6. This phase is temporary

The sleepless nights, the endless feeds, the uncertainty—it won’t last forever. The newborn days are intense but fleeting. One day, you’ll look back and realize just how strong you were.

Hang in there, mama—you’re doing an amazing job.
